Owens Corning Cultured Stone® products originated in 1962 when brothers Garrett and Floyd Brown of Vallejo, California saw the need for a new kind of building material. The entrepreneurial pair of plasterers developed manufactured stone veneer: exact replicas of natural stones used for building, cast in flexible molds and hand colored with iron oxide pigments. Made of lightweight aggregate materials, the veneers were approximately one-quarter the weight of full-thickness stone and could be adhered to most wall surfaces.

The Browns' small, regional company began selling to dealers in northern California, but grew quickly as it added new products with broader geographic appeal. About Brampton Brick

Brampton Brick - roots that trace back to the 1800's

The Brampton Brick story begins in 1871 when James Packham opened the Packham Brick Works on the east side of Brampton, south of Queen St. and the railway tracks.

In 1905, with a capital stock of $50,000, the company was incorporated as Brampton Pressed Brick Company Ltd. To capitalize on an abundance of local raw materials, the company relocated to Main St. North.

At the crack of the twentieth century, the engineers and work force achieved an impressive output - 2 million bricks a year.

In 1905, a Four Mould Boyd Brick Press machine was used to press brick. This press was 6' in height, occupied a floor space of 8'x9', and weighed about 10 tons.

Brampton Brick - the next generation

In 1949, the Packhams sold their company to the families who still controlled it near the close of the twentieth century. Actively involved at that time were Allan and Manny Kerbel, Morris Kruger, and Sam Rosenbaum, who owned a European brick-plant.

The company relied on one of the most faithful technologies of the day - the horse - to transport raw materials. Eventually, the horse was replaced with carts, forklifts, and a hoist and wrench.

The newly named Brampton Brick Limited tripled output from the Packham era and manufactured 6,000,000 bricks per year.

To meet market demand, in 1960, Brampton Brick replaced pressed brick equipment with extrusion technology. With this new, efficient process, output soared to 26 million bricks per year.

Brampton Brick - at the dawn of the 21st century

To fulfill its bold plan of becoming a world-leader in brick-making, in 1986, Brampton Brick went public.

The market responded enthusiastically. A capital injection of $32 million financed one of the most advanced brick making facilities in the world, producing 200 million modular brick equivalent top-quality bricks per year. In 2001, the plant capacity was further expanded by another 100 million brick equivalents to yield a total of 300 million a year, making Brampton Brick North America's single largest brick manufacturing facility under one roof. In 2008, a second state of the art manufacturing facility was built in Farmersburg, IN producing 100 million modular bricks.

To achieve maximum efficiencies, the manufacturing process utilizes robotic loaders, instead of conventional hand-loading.

The industry's most skilled and highly trained workers supervise the entire manufacturing process.

Corporate History

The original company was founded in 1933 by J.D. Oaks and operated as a family owned business under the name of Oaks Precast Industries in Guelph, Ontario.

Originally manufactured concrete brick and block for the local renovation market and later precast concrete sewer products.

In May of 1972, Oaks Precast was purchased by Standard Industries (later to be known as Lafarge) from the Oaks family.

In 1981, Oaks diversified into a new market - the concrete paving stone and retaining wall products. Production for these lines began at the Markham, Ontario plant.

The London, Ontario facility (shared with Concrete Pipe Company) produced paving stones and walls during the years 1985 to 1989. This plant was instrumental in the development of the US market in Michigan.

As the years progressed, growth in landscape products increased resulting in new manufacturing facilities being built at Milton, Ontario in 1989 and in Wixom, Michigan in 1991.

In January of 1994, Oaks was involved in the restructuring of Lafarge and the paving stone and retaining wall products became Lafarge Interlocking Pavers and Retaining Walls.

With a focus directed at their core products, Lafarge sold the Pavers and Walls business unit to Brampton Brick Limited in May 2002.

More recently in April of 2006, was the acquisition of the Peel Block facility in Brampton – dedicated to the production of landscape garden walls and concrete masonry products under the Stoneworks Quality by Brampton Brick TM by Oaks Concrete Products.

Brooklin Concrete Products

Since 1952, Brooklin Concrete has focused on developing high quality, cost effective precast concrete products to help homeowners, landscapers, architects, industrial designers and engineers bring outdoor dreams to life. Brooklin Concrete originally began production on a site located in the north end of Brooklin, Ontario. The new company quickly established itself in the marketplace by introducing precast septic tanks in Whitby, Oshawa, and the surrounding areas.

In the early 60s, while searching for a more efficient method for casting concrete patio slabs, Brooklin's founder decided to make a trip to England to observe a hydraulic press for slab and curve production. This trip resulted in the purchase of the first fielding press ever used in North America. This innovative new press enabled Brooklin to produce precast slabs to a level of strength, dimensional accuracy, and overall quality then unheard of in Canada. The new press was soon put to very active use, and as a result of increased demand, a second press was purchased. Through the 60s and early 70s, these fielding presses produced enough municipal curb to edge both sides of highway 401 from Windsor to Montreal.

A branch plant was added in Newmarket in the 1960s, and one was added in Huntsville in the 1970s. In the late 1970s, Brooklin became part of a cutting-edge group of manufacturers who began full-scale production of interlocking concrete pavers; their increasing demand lead to the construction of an automated plant specializing in interlocking pavers, and in 1986, a sales depot was opened in Haliburton.

Today, Brooklin's facilities are highly automated and computerized, with a total output exceeding 700 tonnes of precast concrete per day. Going forward, Brooklin Concrete will continue to pave the way in precast concrete products and technology.

2004: Techo-Bloc brings our Canadian innovations to the United States. The world’s most sophisticated and technologically advanced paving stone and retaining wall production plant opens in Pen Argyl, Pennsylvania.

2005: Techo-Bloc produces the first rugged, high-relief paving stone Santorini. With its strategically accentuated elevations and impressions, this paver provides a bold, hand-hewn look, enhancing any landscape design.

2006: Techo-Bloc presents Monumental Blok, a breakthrough in retaining wall technology. Monumental Blok offers a sculpted, handcrafted appearance while making a bold, strong statement in any landscape. Thanks to Techo-Bloc’s special anchoring system, the stones are simply set into place with a backhoe or small dozer. Monumental Blok allows you to build walls up to twelve feet high without the use of geogrid.
